Gumshoe calculates visibility and rankings based on how AI models respond to the prompts we run in your Visibility Audit (formerly known as a report). Here's what each number on your Visibility Audit dashboard means.
What is a conversation?
A "conversation" is a single prompt sent to a single AI model, along with that model's response. If your Visibility Audit runs 20 prompts across 4 models, that's 80 conversations. Conversations are the denominator behind every visibility score in this article. Think of it as a question-and-answer pair.
One important rule applies to every visibility score: a single conversation contributes to the numerator at most once. If a brand is named five times in the same answer, it still counts as one conversation where the brand appeared, not five.
What is Brand visibility?
- Formula: Conversations where your brand was mentioned ÷ total conversations in the Visibility Audit.
- Definition: The share of conversations in the Visibility Audit where AI models mentioned your brand at least once.
What is Topic visibility?
- Formula: Conversations tied to that topic where your brand was mentioned ÷ total conversations tied to that topic.
- Definition: The share of conversations for a specific topic where your brand was mentioned. A conversation is "tied to" a topic when its underlying prompt is tagged with that topic, so if a prompt carries more than one topic, the conversation counts under each.
What is Persona visibility?
- Formula: Conversations run for that persona where your brand was mentioned ÷ total conversations for that persona.
- Definition: The share of conversations for a specific persona where your brand was mentioned.
What is Model visibility?
- Formula: Conversations generated by that model where your brand was mentioned ÷ total conversations generated by that model.
- Definition: The share of conversations from a specific AI model where your brand was mentioned.
What are Competitive Leaderboard mentions?
- Formula: Count of conversations where the brand was mentioned at least once.
- Definition: The "Mentions" column in the Competitive Leaderboard shows how many conversations each brand appeared in, not the raw count of times the brand was named. A brand mentioned three times in the same answer still counts as one.
What is Competitive Leaderboard visibility?
- Formula: Conversations where the brand was mentioned ÷ total conversations in the Visibility Audit.
- Definition: The percentage of total conversations where each brand was mentioned. For your own brand, this matches the overall Brand visibility score on the Visibility Audit dashboard.
