This is Step 1 of 4 in project setup, and it is where you tell Gumshoe what you want analyzed. Four things are set here, and each section appears as you finish the one above it.
These four settings define the project. Once it is created they are fixed, so it is worth getting them right now. To track a different product line, region, or language later, you create a separate project.
How do I review and edit my brand details?
Gumshoe asks an AI model to describe your brand and shows you what came back: your brand name, your website, and a summary of what your business does. This summary is used to evaluate your presence, so it is worth reading properly.
If anything is off, select Edit details and correct it. This matters most for brands that are described inconsistently across the web, or where a model has confused you with a similarly named company.
When it looks right, select Looks good, continue. The next section then appears.
How do I set a location?
Choose Anywhere for broader personas, prompts, and conversations, or A specific location to enter a city, state, country, or postal code.
Set a location when your customers are concentrated somewhere specific and you want to see how AI models answer for buyers in that region. Leave it as Anywhere if you sell broadly.
For more, see How do I use the Location feature in Gumshoe?
How do I choose a language?
Choose English or Another language. This sets the language your personas use when they talk to the AI models, and the language your topics, personas, prompts, and answers are generated in. The Gumshoe interface itself stays in English.

How do I select a product category?
Gumshoe suggests the product categories it has identified for your brand. Pick the one you want this project to analyze.
This is the most consequential choice on the page. Your product category shapes the personas Gumshoe builds, the topics it explores, and the prompts it sends to the models, so a focused category produces sharper, more actionable results.
You have three other options if none of the suggestions fit:
- Custom product category, where you type your own.
- Continue without a product category, which gives you broader, less targeted personas and prompts.
- Pick one now and set up an additional project for the others. You choose one category per project, so this is the right approach when you want to track several.

How do I save my changes and move on?
Select Continue at the bottom once you have reviewed all four sections. That saves everything on this page together.
Step 2 is choosing your plan.
Can I change any of this later?
Nothing on this step can be changed once the project is created. Your brand details, product category, location, and language all define the project, so they are locked in when you finish setup.
That is not a limitation so much as how the data stays clean: one project per category and per region means you can see exactly which offering is performing and which levers are working. To track something different, start another project. One thing that is separate: if a brand is showing under the wrong name in your Competitive Leaderboard, you can correct that display name without starting over. That is a label across your company account rather than a project setting.
